Some people find their calling in a less-than-usual way. For Richard Kelley, becoming a lawyer came from being a father. When his own children were born 16 weeks prematurely, developing learning disabilities as a result, Richard knew he had to become their champion and their advocate, and enrolled in law school to best represent their needs. He also offers pro bono legal guidance to families of children with learning disabilities. He has recently completed training through Federation of Children with Special Needs (FCSC) as a Special Education Surrogate Parent for children in the custody of the Department of Families and Children (DFC) to make sure they, too, have the representation they need to get the opportunities they deserve.
In addition to his keen interest in the legal rights of special education children, he has a strong background in the construction and real estate development businesses. He has served as a Director, Vice President or higher executive level in areas including project management, construction project management, planning and design, commercial leasing, and operations management, as well as Human Resources and employment law.
While running his own North Andover law firm, Richard Kelley also serves as Vice President of Operations and General Counsel for National Energy and Light, where he is responsible for all legal affairs, negotiates contracts, and oversees regulatory compliance.
His practical experience as a father, a business executive, in real estate and construction, in finance, in negotiations, and in employee and vendor relations has given him a practical, yet strategic, approach to helping people and businesses with their legal needs.
Richard Kelley is a graduate of Salem State College, Salem, MA with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance.
He received his Juris Doctor degree from the Massachusetts School of Law in Andover, Massachusetts and is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar.
